Gocta Waterfall

The Gocta Waterfall is a gem of the Peruvian Amazon, hidden among green hills, cloud forests, and fascinating archaeological sites.

The Gocta Waterfall is a gem of the Peruvian Amazon, hidden among green hills, cloud forests, and fascinating archaeological complexes. Its grandeur and natural beauty captivates every traveler, and its height of over 770 meters makes it one of the tallest waterfalls in the world. Considered a deity by many locals, it is a unique destination that every traveler should experience at least once in their lifetime. Pristine nature, crystal-clear waters, and a diverse array of birds and wild plants make up the stunning landscape that Gocta has to offer.

It is a place filled with impressive marshes, lagoons, and cascades that look like beautiful paintings and offer a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature. In this area you can also find archaeological and natural sites such as the Kuélap Fortress and the Karajía Sarcophagi. But the crown jewel will always be the spectacular Gocta Falls in Chachapoyas.

Gocta is far from the hustle and bustle of the city and noise pollution, as there is no public or private transport. Here you can breathe fresh air, and the only sound on the trail is the echo of the falling cascade. Being set in a natural environment, it is not easy to reach. But the journey is worth it, because witnessing the constant flow of the waterfall is indescribable — it fills your soul and puts your mind in a state of calm like never before.

The Legend of Gocta

Over the years, legends and traditions have been passed down from generation to generation, and Gocta is no exception. According to legend, no one can safely visit Gocta because a blonde mermaid guards the entrance to the falls. Local inhabitants say that many people have disappeared in the lagoon located at the entrance to the waterfalls. All of these disappearances are directly or indirectly linked to this mythical figure, who is said to be guarding an invaluable treasure.

There is no exact date for the discovery of Gocta, since its valley was home to human settlements hundreds of years ago. These settlements from different cultures are where generations have lived around the waterfalls. However, in 2002, German researcher Stefan Ziemendorf came to Gocta to study caves discovered in the Amazon.

From 2002 onward, this incredible waterfall began appearing in local media before quickly crossing international borders. Then in 2006, a research team led by Stefan Ziemendorf successfully measured the Gocta cascade. It is recognized as one of the tallest waterfalls in Peru, with a height of over 770 meters. Since then, Gocta has climbed even faster onto the world travel radar and has become a must-see destination.

Climate

Thanks to its privileged location on the edge between the jungle and the Peruvian Andes, Gocta’s climate is something that surprises every traveler. On your way to the waterfall, you might encounter a clear blue sky or a sudden downpour. Maximum temperatures sometimes exceed 27°C, minimums rarely drop below 10°C, and atmospheric humidity is high. December, January, February, and March are the rainiest months. July, August, and September are winter months with clear skies and sunshine. April, May, June, October, and November bring a mix of rainy and sunny weather.
