The Yanahuara Viewpoint in Arequipa is a 19th-century colonial terrace with white sillar arches and panoramic views of the Misti volcano over the White City.
The Yanahuara Viewpoint was built in the 19th century. It stands directly in front of a park and alongside a colonial-era church called “San Juan Bautista”.
The viewpoint features inscriptions on its façade with popular Arequipa quotes as well as citations from important Arequipa thinkers. It is also one of the symbols of Arequipa and one of the most photographed spots by tourists visiting the “White City.” From here, visitors enjoy a wonderful view of the city and the Chachani, Pichu Pichu, and Misti volcanoes.
History of the Yanahuara District
Yanahuara is one of the oldest and most historic districts of Arequipa. Its name comes from Quechua and means “village of dark-skinned people” or “dark village,” a reference to the bronzed complexions of its original inhabitants. During the colonial period it was a peripheral neighborhood inhabited by artisans and workers, but over time it became one of the calmest and most picturesque areas of the city.
The neighborhood retains cobblestone streets, white sillar mansions, and a serene atmosphere that contrasts with the bustle of the historic center. Yanahuara was declared a National Cultural Heritage Site and its architecture reflects the colonial tradition that characterizes Arequipa.
The Viewpoint and Its Sillar Arches
The most recognizable feature of the viewpoint is its white sillar arches — the volcanic material that gives Arequipa its nickname of “White City.” Each arch bears an engraved quote from an Arequipa intellectual, poet, or thinker, making it both a visual and literary monument. Among the best-known phrases are verses by Mariano Melgar, the romantic Arequipa poet who was executed during the war of independence.
Behind each arch opens an incomparable panoramic view. On clear days — which in Arequipa are the majority, thanks to its dry climate — the three volcanoes that frame the city can be seen with great clarity: Chachani (6,057 m), Misti (5,822 m), and Pichu Pichu (5,664 m). Misti, with its nearly perfect cone, is the most photogenic and dominates the horizon.
The Church of San Juan Bautista
Alongside the viewpoint stands the church of San Juan Bautista, one of the best-preserved colonial constructions in Arequipa. Its Baroque façade in white sillar was built in the 18th century and has survived numerous earthquakes. The interior holds altarpieces, canvases, and sculptures of great artistic value. The church was the spiritual heart of the neighborhood for centuries and remains an active place of worship today.
What to Do in Yanahuara
Beyond the viewpoint, the Yanahuara district offers a complete tourist experience:
- Restaurants and picanterías: Yanahuara is famous for its traditional picanterías serving classic Arequipa cuisine: rocoto relleno, chupe de camarones, adobo, and other emblematic dishes.
- Cafés with a view: several modern cafés offer tables with direct views of Misti, perfect for a relaxed stop.
- Handicraft shops: along the park and surrounding streets, handicrafts, textiles, and typical souvenirs are sold.
- Photography: sunrise and sunset are the most sought-after times for photographers, when the light bathes Misti in golden and pink tones.
Best Time to Visit
Arequipa enjoys a privileged climate with more than 300 sunny days per year. The dry season (May to November) guarantees clear skies and the best views of the volcanoes. During the rainy season (December to April), the volcanoes may be covered by clouds, especially in the mornings.
