The “Los Pantanos de Villa” Wildlife Refuge is a natural treasure located just 40 minutes from central Lima, in the district of Chorrillos. Covering 263.27 hectares, this protected wetland is home to incredible biodiversity and is particularly famous for its birdlife. The sanctuary welcomes thousands of migratory birds every year, in addition to sheltering a wide variety of resident species. In total, more than 130 bird species have been recorded, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers.

Climate: A Year-Round Destination

The climate at Los Pantanos de Villa is typical of Peru’s central coast, with grey winters, high humidity, and light drizzle between June and September, while summers — from December to March — are sunnier. With an average annual temperature of 18.6°C and relative humidity between 85% and 99%, this refuge can be visited at any time of year. If you are looking to spot migratory birds, the months between October and March are ideal.

Biodiversity and Observation Circuits

Los Pantanos de Villa offer an unparalleled experience for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts. Among the most notable circuits:

  • Laguna Grande: Features an observation tower offering a panoramic view. On this lagoon, it is common to spot species such as the White-cheeked Pintail, the Great Grebe, and the Neotropic Cormorant.

  • Laguna Génesis: Located near the Interpretation Center, it is ideal for exploring the totora reed beds and spotting birds such as the Many-colored Rush-Tyrant and the Rushbird.

  • Laguna Miramar: The closest lagoon to the sea, it attracts migratory birds. Here you can spot everything from the Peruvian Pelican to rare species such as the Osprey.

The refuge offers three main routes that can be done on foot or by boat:

  3. Tablitas-Espejos Circuit: A unique boat experience through the lagoons.

How to Get There

  • Public transport: Take the Metropolitano to the Matellini station and then a feeder bus toward Villa El Salvador, getting off at the Los Pantanos de Villa entrance.

  • Private transport: Follow Av. Prolongación Huaylas toward the Panamericana Sur. The entrance is clearly signposted.

A Responsible and Educational Experience

Since 2008, the National Service for State-Protected Natural Areas (SERNANP) has managed the refuge, with the support of PROHVILLA, an agency of the Lima Provincial Municipality. Visitors can learn about the importance of wetlands and enjoy a guided tour through the trails.
