Bayoz Waterfall

The Bayoz Waterfall is a spectacular 50-meter cascade in the central jungle of Perené, Chanchamayo, Junín, surrounded by tropical vegetation and exotic birds.

The district of Perené, also known as the “City of the Three Plateaus,” is located in the central Peruvian jungle of Chanchamayo, in the province of Junín. Situated 330 kilometers from Lima, this small town is home to the local Ashaninka community and is surrounded by lush vegetation of mountains, valleys, lagoons, and waterfalls.

Bayoz Waterfall is a spectacular cascade that originates from the Bayoz River, just 30 km from the district of Perené. This 60-meter-high waterfall is one of the favorites among tourists vacationing in the central Peruvian jungle. The surroundings are filled with vegetation and trails that invite visitors to connect with the nature of the high-jungle region.

The Natural Environment of Bayoz

The Bayoz Waterfall is located in the high jungle of Junín, also known as “ceja de selva” or “yungas” — one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. This transitional ecosystem between the Andes and the Amazon is characterized by evergreen forests, constant mist, and a richness of flora and fauna that surpasses most ecosystems in the world.

The trail to the waterfall winds through paths lined with giant ferns, bromeliads, wild orchids, and moss-covered trees draped in epiphytes. The humidity, the sound of insects, and the birdsong make the hike a unique sensory experience that prepares visitors for the impact of seeing the cascade itself.

The waterfall forms natural pools at its base with stone beds, ideal for cooling off after the hike. The gradual shape of the channel allows for safe swimming away from the force of the main drop.

Biodiversity: Wildlife and Flora

The Bayoz area is a paradise for nature lovers:

Birds: the Chanchamayo region is famous among birdwatchers for its extraordinary variety of species. Among the most sought-after are the Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruviana), Peru’s national bird with its brilliant orange plumage; toucans, parrots, and dozens of hummingbird species. Some specialized birdwatching tours include the Bayoz area on their routes.

Mammals: monkeys, sloths, tapirs, and various rodent species inhabit the forests surrounding the waterfall. Nights at the nearby campsite may be accompanied by the calls of howler monkeys.

Flora: wild orchids are perhaps the most striking element of the vegetation along this stretch. The Chanchamayo region is one of Peru’s most orchid-diverse areas.

The Ashaninka Community

The district of Perené is historical territory of the Ashaninka people, one of the most numerous indigenous groups in the Peruvian Amazon, with a presence of thousands of years in the valleys of the central jungle. The Ashaninka are known for their historical resilience: during the period of terrorism in Peru (the 1980s–1990s), their community was one of the most severely affected and showed great courage in resisting.

Visiting the Bayoz area is an opportunity to learn about aspects of Ashaninka culture, discover their traditional medicinal practices with native plants, and provide economic support to the local communities that participate in tourism in the area.

Activities at Bayoz Waterfall

Beyond visiting the waterfall, the rugged terrain of the area offers a variety of activities:
