Tirol Waterfall

The Tirol Waterfall in Chanchamayo, Junín, is a triple cascade in the high jungle accessible from La Merced, surrounded by lush tropical nature.

The Tirol Waterfall is located in the province of Chanchamayo, in the Junín region, a few kilometers from the city of San Ramón. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Peru and one of the most visited by tourists in this part of the country.

The waterfall is formed by three cascades, with a total height of 35 meters. The two upper drops are smaller but no less beautiful, while the third — the lowest — forms a 7-meter-wide curtain of water that falls onto a stone pool. The waterfall takes its name from the Tirol River, one of the tributaries of the Tulumayo in this high-jungle region.

The Hike to Tirol

One of the attractions of Tirol Waterfall is the access hike itself, which takes approximately 40 minutes from the entry point. It is not a difficult or exhausting trek, but it is rich in experiences: the trail passes through high-jungle forest with lush vegetation, Amazonian-style hanging bridges over crystal-clear streams, and a constant soundtrack of birds, insects, and the murmur of water.

Unlike other waterfalls that can be seen in just a few minutes, Tirol invites visitors to walk slowly and enjoy the surroundings as much as the cascade itself. The abundant trail flora — tree ferns, orchids, bromeliads, lianas — and wildlife — brightly colored butterflies, tropical birds, colorful lizards — make the hike itself a mini biodiversity experience.

The Chanchamayo Setting

The province of Chanchamayo, where Tirol Waterfall is located, is one of the most important ecotourism destinations in central Peru. Its geographical position in the high jungle (or “ceja de selva”) gives it a temperate climate and vegetation that blends Andean and Amazonian elements.

The city of San Ramón — located a few kilometers from the waterfall — is a small and welcoming city that serves as the base for exploring the area. Together with the sister city of La Merced, it forms the tourist hub of the province.

The Chanchamayo region is famous throughout Peru for the production of high-quality coffee and cacao. The coffee farms in the area produce some of the country’s most prized varieties. It is possible to visit coffee estates and observe the harvesting and processing of the beans, especially during the months of June to August.

Wildlife and Birdwatching

The Chanchamayo area is one of the most important birdwatching destinations in Peru. The combination of ecosystems ranging from mountain forests to the lowland jungle creates ideal conditions for an extraordinary diversity of bird species.

Among the most sought-after species by birdwatchers in the area:

  • The Andean cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruviana), Peru’s national bird with its dramatic orange plumage
  • The emerald toucanet
  • Various hummingbird species in gardens and forest edges
  • Parrots and parakeets in the treetops

The “El Rancho” Campsite

For those wishing to spend more time immersed in nature, halfway between Tirol Waterfall and the town of San Ramón lies a place called “El Rancho.” This spot offers the possibility of camping, allowing visitors to connect more deeply with the natural environment of the high jungle. Sleeping under the sky of the ceja de selva, with the nocturnal sounds of the forest as a backdrop, is an experience that many visitors remember as one of the most special moments of their trip.

Regional Cuisine

At the entrance and surroundings of Tirol Waterfall, it is possible to sample typical dishes of the local cuisine: chicken stew prepared with aromatic jungle herbs; yuca juane or rice juane — a traditional Amazonian dish wrapped in bijao leaves; and tropical fruits such as granadilla, maracuyá (passion fruit), chirimoya, and aguaje. Locally crafted handicrafts are also sold.
