Huanchaco Beach Resort

Huanchaco is a traditional seaside resort 12 km from Trujillo, famous for its ancient totora reed boats, surf waves, and delicious northern-style ceviche.

Huanchaco is the place to be. Located just over 20 minutes from the city of Trujillo, this beach is the perfect destination for surfers and those who want to enjoy some of the best seafood in Peruvian cuisine.

Spending sunny summer days in a landscape shaped by the Moche and Chimú cultures is a fantastic opportunity. Huanchaco has been one of the region’s ports for many years. The name Huanchaco comes from “Guaukocha,” meaning “beautiful lagoon and golden fish.”

The ancient Trujillanos rode totora reed horses across the waters of the Pacific Ocean — a skill passed down from generation to generation to the Huanchaqueros of today, who continue to use them for fishing and other recreational activities. A big part of visiting Huanchaco is riding one of these traditional craft to see the beach from a different perspective.

Surfing in Huanchaco

This is one of the must-visit destinations for surfers looking for waves to practice and improve their technique. It has been awarded the title of World Surf Reserve — the first in Latin America and the fifth in the world.

The waters of Huanchaco have perfect waves for one of the most famous water sports in the world. Whether you are an experienced surfer or have never set foot on a surfboard in your life, Huanchaco is the place for anyone who wants to take on the adrenaline rush.

For beginners, several surf schools are located along the beach offering lessons and equipment for this exciting adventure sport. For experienced surfers, international competitions are held here throughout the year. If you are lucky enough to coincide with one of these events during your visit to Huanchaco, sit down on the shore and enjoy the spectacular maneuvers of the competing surfers.

What to Do in Huanchaco

Visitors can participate in free activities and others for which special tourist discounts are available at the Huanchaco Spa.

  • Watch the sunset from the Huanchaco Pier. This structure, which serves as a majestic viewpoint, stretches approximately 110 meters.

  • Surf all day. If it is your first time, take at least one surf lesson. You will find a school that can teach you the techniques and provide the equipment you need to connect with the ocean.

  • The Totora Reed Boats (Caballitos de Totora) are traditional handcrafted vessels still used for artisan fishing and are themselves tourist attractions. Visitors can rent them to paddle close to shore. They can even be used for riding waves like a surfboard.

  • Visit the colonial church in Huanchaco. If you are a fan of colonial art, this is a place you will love. Inside are religious works from the colonial era, complemented by an image of the Virgen del Socorro. They are among the most visited sites during Holy Week in Trujillo.
